my beautiful boy
they say that there are three days that stand out in your mind: the day you get your dog, the day you know he is leaving you, and the day he leaves. chester was diagnosed with lymphoma and shortly after that i said goodby to my dearest pal, and let him go. the hardest decision of my life. i wish we had had more time together, i miss my sweet red boy.
chester came into my life 8 years ago. i met him in his foster home in coquille, at the home of marion and tom mason, he was living in doggie paradise with 5 other goldens . when marion brought him into the room to meet me, i saw this gorgeous red golden coming to me. he just layed down, put his head in my lap and looked up at me, and i was instantly smitten. chester had been with them a year after his original owner had fallen on hard times. he had become a favorite of tom, who was ill with lou gerhigs disease and although they loved him, they thought he deserved a family of his own.
chester was my first dog, and within moments he had my heart forever. once he came into my life i soon became immersed in all things dog. on our daily walks he sniffed and ran after squirrels, he greeted everyone we saw. i made new friends at the dog park. he traveled with me to california to the redwoods, to the tetons and anywhere else i wanted to visit. we made many many trips to the beach where he managed to find disgusting things to roll in and was always so proud of himself when he returned to me. watching him run on the beach joyfully was a beautiful thing. smelling him on the way home was not!
he loved to eat apples and carrots and loaves of bread. it was dangerous to leave bread on the counter as he would find a way to get it. he loved his “guys”, and carried them around in his mouth much of the time. he had a beautiful red coat that was incredibly soft. his big feathery tail was unique. as he aged his face became gray and his tail lost some hair but he was still my beautiul boy.
he loved to have his tummy rubbed and to just lay on the couch with his head in my lap. he slept by my side each night and greeted me with a wag and a smile whether i had been gone 5 minutes or two weeks.
when my daughter ruby came along, he gently took his place as the number two in the house. he tolerated her kisses and hugs and later when she wanted to brush him and read him stories he accepted that as he did most things - with great dignity. she loved him so very much and always said goodbye to him before we left the house and kissed him goodnight each night.
adjusting to life without him will take some time. i still step over “his place” in the middle of the night, look for his face at the door greeting me and reach to stroke his sweet face. i miss my beloved boy.
