thirty seven

its been thirty seven months since my dossier was logged in at the ccaa to adopt hazel. at the time the wait for a child from china was 14 months. if she had not called to me from a special needs list that came out 2 weeks after i was logged in, i would be getting a referral in the upcoming batch, expected this week. she has been home for 33 months. there were originally 11 families in our log in group many have switched to special needs in the three long years since 3-7-06. but there are a few who will be seeing the faces of their children for the first time very soon.

so much has changed in those months. the wait to adopt from china has slowed to an agonizing crawl. china instituted new rules so that singles, chubby people and anyone with a facial deformity no longer qualifies. also excluded are those who have less than 80k in assets and those who have ever taken antidepressants. these capricious "rules" make no sense to me. but china can do what it wants, these are their children first.

they say that they are fewer children available. frankly i don't believe that.i've been to china, i've seen the grinding poverty and i know the impact of the one child policy. i know children still wait. the number of orphanages is staggering. the number of kids growing up in institutions without families is heart breaking. i know many bright loving people who long to have a child and would make wonderful parents, some who wanted second china child, some who have room in their hearts for another child to love. but because they do not qualify under the new rules, they won't be able to adopt from china.

it makes me sad to think about the what if's. at the same time i am deeply thankful that i have my two girls.

Indeed! And aren't we all the better for having Ru & Hazel in our lives. Thank you for having the heart, bravery, and everything else to share your love, family, friends and resources with two super great kids. I'm so glad you made it "by the bell" in terms of the "new rules" (that seem similar to Bill Maher's enlightening new rules--strange and capricious). The slow pace of adoption is really is too bad for those kids...

I have to wonder what must be behind the political or economic reason for the slow-down...

Totally hear ya! WHen I was thinking of adopting 4 years ago, I was imagining my life with two girls from China. Thankfully I qualified under the old requirment or I would not be seeing my sweet Tate's face right now.
