vacation bliss
in 1993 when i got out of midwifery school after nearly three years of living in new haven, i entered the world of work. within a month i realized that though i really loved what i was doing, it was exhausting to shepherd new lives into the world and take care of pregnant women all day everyday. (i hear some serious whining all day every day.)
so i instituted the mandatory yearly luxury vacation. i am a planner. like a mule, i need a vacation carrot to keep me going in my day to day life. i enjoy the process of researching where to go, and what to see . i relish packing and selecting the books and knitting projects to take with me.
the first trip i made was a float trip in a dory down the grand canyon. it was incredible. spending two weeks on a beautiful wooden boat on the colorado river in a pristine wilderness. early morning coffee sitting in a chair in the sand watching the river flow by. nights under stars viewed through steep canyon walls. days hiking in slot canyons.
i went to kauai the next year and almost every year after that until made the decision to adopt in 2001. then i had to be on a budget and the luxury vacation was no longer annual. kauai is a place of immense beauty, and a slow pace. the perfect place to step out of fast paced life and reclaim relaxation. i was hiking on the napali coast of kauai the day my dossier was logged into the ccaa in china for ruby’s adoption january 2002. i hadn’t been there for six years. and i haven’t taken any real time off since hazel had her surgery in oct 2006- which was not exactly vacation.
two weeks there was just what i needed. i sat on the beach, read a few books, swam in the ocean, snorkeled, ate a lot of tropical fruit, hunted for beach glass, played with the kids. i left work and our dreary winter behind and soaked up the warm sun and blissfully blue ocean. i saw whales, turtles and monk seals . i spent a day on a sailboat, slept all night most nights. hung out with friends and my mom. watched my kids play. laughed until i snorted. it was in a word- incredible.
