year of the pig

we ventured out on saturday night to the portland asian fest. in honor of chinese new year, there was a large gathering at the convention center. it featured many booths selling various wares , food and entertainment. we went to see ruby’s pal linnea, dance on the main stage with the kindergarten class from woodstock. they were slated to go on at 4 pm. well at 630 they finally got on stage! shades of my future i think...

this year is the year of the gold pig. that means if you are 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 or 82 this year- this is your year. you are supposed to wear red and jade to protect yourself from the bad ju ju when it is your birth year. so for all of my pip pals out there- don’t forget to protect yourself!

i always enjoy the chinese new year festivities that we participate in. the asian fest , did not exactly turn out like we planned but we had a good time anyway. we planted ourselves by the main stage and watched the various groups dance, do kungfu, do gymnastics and sing kareoke. we saw lots of people we know from the adoption community and ate some really good dumplings and hom bao.

one of the traditions of many asian festivals is the dragon dance. ruby was always terrified of the dragon dancers- loud drumming, and scary faced dragon costume getting too close. most years we have left the vicinity of the dragon dance. because it was too loud and scary. this year she held tightly to my hand and voiced her displeasure but tolerated it. hazel on the other hand was fractionated by the dragons. when the dance was done and the dragon went behind the curtain to “sleep” she marched right over to see them. ruby loves to get dressed up for these events-she wore one of her chinese dressses and hazel wore stripes.

the photos of the girls in the chinese dresses are part of my annual effort to get a portrait of ruby and now hazel at chinese new year. i set up a little photo studio at home with white sheets and snap away. aren’t they cute??
