riverdance
nothing can make me laugh like a good saturday night live skit. although i can never stay up to watch it real time, it was the first show i programed into my vcr when i got one. i spent many a sunday morning with java in hand giggling to the outrageous and hilarious takes on life in the u.s.a. . i confess that when george bush appeared on an intro to dana carvey’s imitation of him, his status went up a notch in my mind.
the skits that made fun of the show “riverdance” in the 90’s kind of went over my head since i had not seen “riverdance” and i didn’t really know what all the hype was about. i remember the actor with a mullet, flowing shirt and irish music but somehow it did not resonate for me. i may have seen snippets of the real “riverdance “ on public tv but i missed the phenomenon.
until recently. i got the experience of “riverdance “ for the first time when bought an unopened vhs tape at goodwill for ruby. ruby loves music and dancing . i let her watch a video while hazel naps so that i can get things picked up , talk on the phone or take care of whatever has been overlooked so long i can no long stand it. so i’m always on the lookout for things that won’t drive me nuts to listen to while i do my thing.
one satruday afternoon i popped in the infamous riverdance, thinking that i would get an hour or so of stuff done while she sat and watched. i went about my business but soon was interrupted with a request for help with getting the pink tu tu with rhinestone heart on followed by the request for shoes that “make noise” . once said shoes were found and those were securely buckled on her feet the fun began.
she positioned herself on the hearth, better for making noise with shoes. but soon found that she could not see well enough to dance along with michael flatley and company as they leapt and jumped and made their feet & mullets fly. the solution was that i placed the learning tower ( our kitchen helper- a platform for helping cook) directly in front of the tv. ah- soon i was giggling over my own personal interpretation of “riverdance”- watching my four and a half year old daughter in pink attire, with sparkly shoes dancing atop a platform was almost as good as a snl skit.
