the maple bar

we are headed off to the umpqua river for a few days away with friends. this morning i got the westfalia all loaded up and ready to go. a few last minute things to pack so i sent the girls off with my mom for a walk and got it all neatly packed. there is so much gear that goes with a baby: port a crib, port a seat, backpack, toys books , blankets, clothes , not to mention rubys entertainment and food and all that stuff. got in to move it for easier loading turned the key and nothing happened!

the short version is that here i sit waiting for triple a to come and tow me to daryl, my mechanic for a new alternator. he may be able to do it today but our window of opportunity for leaving today is closing quickly . the 4 hour drive seems more likely to be pain free if we go during nap time. darn.

this is our first adventure as a family of three so i’m glad that the problem showed itself before we left our driveway. i imagine it would not be so fun to be stranded on the road with a full bus and two kids.

despite its age and need for frequent repairs i love the westy. i know many of you think i am nuts to have it, but it had grown on me and provided so many good adventures that i hope to keep it running for a long time. now that it is no longer the daily driver, i hope to help it age more gracefully so that in times like this we can enjoy the benefits of self sufficient, convenient camping and adventuring.

it will be a while before ruby and hazel are really ready for road trips, but i hope they continue to be good travelers. i look forward to us spending time at the coast, silver falls and the other close by get aways we are lucky enough to be near, and one day to craters of the moon, the tetons and yellowstone.

hazels surgery has been scheduled for october 2. i don’t have all the details yet, but anticipate that she will be in the hospital 7 to 10 days with 2 to 3 in the pediatric icu. as i said , most kids said through this and i hope that she is one of them! i will be taking 4 to 6 weeks off while she recovers.
