Travel timing musings
the mystery of the chinese government and its capricious timing takes a prominent place in the lives of people adopting from china. there are vast internet groups devoted to keeping yourself busy while waiting. first the wait for dossier to china, then the wait for a log in date. followed by the referral wait and final the travel approval notice. most egroups abound with rumors that grow irritating after just a few days.
with a waiting child, i find myself in a different position than most. i have in effect my "referral" - i know who my daughter is, where she is,and thanks to the magic of the internet, i have even seen photos of her orphanage. what i don't know is when i will get approval to travel to china to get her. with ruby, i got my referral on february 23, travel notice in mid march and boarded a plane for china on april 5. the waiting child process is different. travel approval comes sooner, but how much sooner is hard to pinpoint. the range is 19 to 140-something days. i am on the short end of that now. i admit that not knowing when i will be going to bring hazel home is stressful.
i am confident that no matter when i inform my supervisor of my need for time off its not going to be pretty. imagine yourself walking in to your supervisors office saying " well actually i know i haven't mentioned this before but i am adopting a baby and will be taking 12 weeks of fmla. oh and by the way i have no idea when i'm leaving to get her , but the good news is that i can give you 2 weeks notice. oh yes and the last thing- it will either be in june july or august." good times await me .
i neglected to get my last hep a shot for my first trip to china, so this week will be picking up meds for the trip and getting that last immunization.i have a big box filled with travel stuff. the pile keeps growing. i still have hopes of carry on only- but we'll see. since i am only going to one climate- HOT AND HUMID my wardrobe won't be taking up much room so i may be able to pull it off.the meds alone are a huge pile. capped by a pile o peptobismol. black tongue here i come.
